In usability tests, we often see seemingly small language issues result in relatively large problems with a task. Recently, I was similarly tripped up when presented with this question:
I wanted to answer: "I’m a registered SmartMoney.com user." I stared at the question for some time before realizing that I was suppose to answer Yes here.
They are asking people to self-identify - there are 3 possibilities - but only 2 are explicitly stated. The third possibility - that I’m a new user - is implicit in the "No" button. Confusingly, the question seems to be asking people to make a choice between two options - but the answer options (Yes/No) don’t correspond to options posed in the question.
